I may go by @melmsie now, but a decade ago when AIM was all the rage, you’d find me at another handle…
Drumroll please… My screen name was BabeeMel3. Don’t laugh! I thought I was very cute spelling “baby” with two “e’s”. And you know what my go-to away messages were? About 95 percent of the time I’d put up song lyrics and I’d usually opt for Justin Timberlake or All American Rejects (remember them?!). I was such a teenybopper.
While I was taking a trip down memory lane, I just had to get my friends and the Glamour gang to spill their AIM memories.
Our girl Gena says:
For the record, I will never stop being embarrassed about this, but I remember posting John Mayer lyrics as my college away messages. Often. And my roommate’s little brother, who was probably like 13, had “smoothplaya” as his screen name, which horrified her. To this day, when I ask her about him, I’m like, How’s Smoothplaya?
I had an away message that said, “If your name is homework, then I’m doing you on my bedroom floor.” WHATTTTTTTTTT?????
My new pickup line is definitely going to start, “Is your name homework? Because…” Also, for the record: bdawg377 (for my street address, obvs)
Mine was (and this is so embarrassing) Snickersrtasty. Because, well, I liked Snickers.
Mine was BoyCrazy7 (because apparently BoyCrazy and BoyCrazy1-6 were already taken)
Mickey had two names:
Rockstar56214 and CuddlePony773 > [Ed note: I’m now referring to Mickey as CuddlePony773 every time I talk to him.]
You know I had to share some of my high school photos too! Yeap, I rocked the Jersey blond highlights for a while.
My friend Nicole says:
ColeTpop99a: Cole (Nicole), Tpop( Tequila Poppers), 99A (99 apples). I thought it was cool I was drinking underage, OK? STOP LAUGHING.
My friend Kelly says:
My main one was ChEeReBeL22 (Notice how every other letter was upper case. SUPER cute). It stemmed from me being a CHEERleader for the REBELS. And 22? NO IDEA! And my away messages were always either song lyrics from an emo band I was into or cute little things like “aRoUnD tHe hOuSe
My friend Christina says:
Mine was haesun102. 102 stands for “forever” in Korean and haesun is my Korean name lol corny. My away message was always brb or something lame like that. I definitely did not do the whole “hEY gUyZZ bRb **********” though. > *[Ed note: I used to use “~” every chance I got, oops!]*My friend Brian says:
Baggio8100. Baggio was my favorite Italian soccer player when I was mad into soccer. 8100 was my house number. I was the man back then.
My sister, Heather, says:
Mine was craiziecurlz213 because obviously my hair was all kinds of craz-ie curly and the world NEEDED to know!
My (not boring) friend Ashley says:
I’M SO LAME. Mine is alwillia13 because that’s what I got for my SMU college email and I just added the 13 for my birthday. Now can we all do a collective WOMP WOMP cause I’m boring….
And a very mysterious J says:
Mine was LOONEYKID1 just because I love > Looney Tunes. I have no idea why I picked 1. And I always hated away messages so I would just use “brb.” A lot of people in college would always be like, “Breakfast, class, hanging with friends, class, lunch, practice, rehearsal all night.. be home later! :)” and I hated that. I didn’t want people to know what I was doing or where I was.
Ah, the good ‘ol days! OK, now it’s your turn: What was your screen name growing up? And your go-to away message? Did you tend to post song lyrics or write in that whole uppercase/lowercase style? Are you still friends with a lot of the same people who used to be on your Buddy List? Tell me!
