A few times in the past, I considered buying pregnant friends gift certificates for prenatal massages, but I always decided against it–I wasn’t sure what exactly such a massage would entail and whether it would end up being relaxing or mostly uncomfortable and awkward (you can’t lay on your belly, you’d feel all huge and clumsy climbing onto the table). Well yesterday, I finally found out the answer firsthand.
I’ve gotten many massages before, but I still wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked into the La Prairie spa at The Ritz Carlton for a prenatal massage. (Never gotten a spa rubdown before? Here’s what to expect when you go.)
I had heard that some prenatal massages involve you laying on your side, but my therapist had rigged the table up with this custom pillow that had cutouts for my pregnant belly and, er, blossoming breasts. She adjusted it to my exact size, and it was covered in a sheet, so it didn’t look too weird. Still, climbing into position while my therapist waited outside was slightly awkward, just because I’m extra-uncoordinated these days. Once I was in, the cushion was amazingly cozy–and what a treat to be able to snuggle belly-down after months of sleeping on my side!
The massage itself was standard, though she applied less lower-back pressure than she would for a non-pregnant person. I was glad she still put lots of oomph into my shoulder muscles, which have felt extra-tired lately, perhaps from the looser ligaments associated with being with-child (my heavy handbags probably don’t help). There was one more semi-awkward moment when she had to slide the pillow out from under me so I could flip over for a few minutes at the end; I had to get on all fours (wearing basically nothing) with the blanket draped over me while she reached under to remove the pillow and readjust the sheet, and I was too quick to lay down and it got kind of tangled.
Overall: My verdict is that prenatal massage is definitely a great gift idea for a pregnant loved one–or just a great way to show yourself some love during a physically stressful time!
